Father of the Year Awards Founder and Apparel legend, Sylvan Landau, passes away at age 85.

We mourn the loss of our founder, mentor and dear friend, Sylvan Landau, who passed away on May 9th.  We will miss him greatly, but cherish knowing that the legacy he leaves as a father to his family, through the Father of the Year Awards, numerous charities he has nurtured and profound impact on the apparel industry, will be long enduring.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Sylvan's devoted wife Margie, his children and the rest of his wonderful family with whom he was always very close and about whom he was ever proud.  To all his family and dear friends, we extend our most sincere condolences.  We will have a special tribute to Sylvan at our luncheon this year celebrating 35 years of his great leadership and inspiration to fathers.

The Sylvan Landau Founder's Scholarship Award was established this year by a seed grant from the Dallas Market Center to honor Sylvan and his lifetime of helping children, families and others in need in our community.  If you would like to make a donation to his scholarship fund in honor of Sylvan, you may do so by noting that with your donation sent by mail or by the "Donate" link on the home page (using the "special message for Merchant" box at checkout).

Father of the Year Awards Honors Local Dads

Luncheon Celebrates 35th Anniversary

DALLAS (May 4, 2010) – What do one President of the United States and governor of Texas, three local news anchors, six local mayors, and 11 Dallas Cowboys franchise members have in common? They are all former Father of the Year Awards honorees.

The Father of the Year Award honors fathers – respected business leaders who are deeply involved with and an inspiration to their family and community.  This year’s honorees are Larry J. Haynes, partner, Ernst & Young; Chad Hennings, president, Hennings Management Corporation and former Dallas Cowboy (1992-2000); and Tom Leppert, mayor, City of Dallas. Scott Murray, former channel five sports anchor, current chairman and CEO of Murray Media and a Father of the Year honoree in 2002, is the luncheon’s Master of Ceremonies.

Money raised from the luncheon will benefit local children’s charities: Christian Community Action, Girls, Inc. of Metropolitan Dallas, and West Dallas Community School; and the Father of the Year Scholarship Fund and Sylvan Landau Founder’s Scholarship.

The Father of the Year Awards was founded 35 years ago by Sylvan Landau, former executive vice president, major stores, at the Dallas Market Center. The committee has honored 107 outstanding fathers and has raised nearly $4 million for more than 70 children’s charities to date.

"These three honorees not only exemplify great fatherhood, but also inspire others to follow their leadership in business, the community and, most importantly, their own families,” said Greg Sampson, chairman of the 2010

Father of the Year Awards. “Celebrating their lasting legacy of excellence will

also help benefit our worthy children’s charities and scholarship programs that will provide education, training and encouragement to future community leaders.”

To celebrate its 35 years of history, Father of the Year is adding an online auction running from May 27 to Father’s Day on June 20. The auction features a dream vacation to the Riviera Maya, an autographed Dallas Cowboys football and a Dallas Cowboys Texas Stadium seat, and can be accessed from the organization’s website www.fatheroftheyearawards.org.

This year’s luncheon will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m., Thursday, May 27, 2010, at the Frontiers of Flight Museum, located at 6911 Lemmon Avenue, Dallas. Tickets may be purchased individually for $150. A table of ten and sponsorship may be purchased at the $1,500, $3,000, $10,000 and $25,000 levels.
